Considering that Capture One Express is actually cheaper than Aftershot Pro this would be a no brainer if I was not using Linux. ![]() Needless to say that I am seriously thinking of getting a Windows machine to work with Capture One. I am wondering what Capture One Pro 7 (Mac/Win) can achieve, if the Express and older version is this good what can I expect from the latest and pro version? After all photography is about expanding your limits and it seems that Aftershot is the one limiting me, not my old and trusted EOS. I know that Aftershot Pro is the fastest program in the whole universe when it comes to RAW conversion, but with such a difference in quality I'm having second thoughts about it. Sadly, my beloved Aftershot was nowhere near the results of Capture One. Image comparison - aftershot pro vs capture one express - highlights punched to 100% ( link to image file) Details appeared everywhere, without the rest of the image losing clarity. ![]() At this point I pushed the highlight slider to the max and starred at the result. My biggest concern is not an issue with Capture One. Image comparison - aftershot pro vs capture one express ( link to image file) Noise exists at ISO1600 and it is visible! Keep in mind that ISO1600 is as much as you get from the 5D. Capture One turned an image at ISO1600 to a wonderful photo just by opening it, no other tool has done that until now. I've shot thousand of photos with my EOS 5D and I've never seen such clarity. More detail, better contrast, magnificent colors appeared in front of my eyes. Yet what I was seeing was something I hadn't seen before, even a year later I could remember that I had never seen this image in my life! This was my image, with my dSLR and my lenses. I installed the 32bit version on a Windows7 virtual machine and opened one image at random. But I would be an idiot to ignore their software. ![]() I couldn't resist of course, we are talking about PhaseOne here, who could? I can't afford their cameras, and truth be told I wouldn't even know what to do with one of them. The current version is Capture One Pro 7 (Mac/Win). Phase One gave out a promo code for Capture One Express 6 this week. No flames please, I went with Canon because my friends had Canons and I could borrow their lenses (and because Nikon made no full frame cameras back then). Raw files are then opened and edited with Aftershot Pro. I shoot with a Canon EOS 5D (original), several Canon lenses and Metz 58 AF-1 flashguns. I am not a pro-photographer and my gear is not considered pro by 2013 standards. I own and use Corel AfterShot Pro (used to called Bible) and I am was happy with it until today. I am a long time GNU/Linux user and I also shoot a few thousand photos every year.
